This transit oriented, mixed income project was designed for low wage workers who work in the neighborhood or at the airport, Mall of America and Downtown. The building was opened in 2006. Hiawatha Commons is located in the Longfellow neighborhood. There are 40 studios, 24 one bedroom and 16 two bedroom apartments. The building is fully handicap accessible.
Capital funding requires that 64 of the units must be rented to tenants who earn less than 50% of area median income at move-in. Twenty units are project based section 8 through the MPHA. Tenants pay their own electricity bills.
Hiawatha Commons is a secure building with controlled entry. Each unit has air conditioned living and bedrooms. The property includes underground and surface parking and ground floor commercial space. The building has coin operated laundry facilities on each floor. Some units have balconies that face west. The area has many stores, restaurants and services within walkable distance.
